Deborah Lowry is Professor of Sociology in the Department of Behavioral and Social Sciences at the University of Montevallo (UM). She earned a Ph.D. from Michigan State University prior to a National Institutes of Health Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at the University of Michigan’s Population Studies Center.
Dr. Lowry joined the Department of Behavioral and Social Sciences in 2011. She teaches several courses at UM, in person and online, including Sociology of Aging & the Life Course, Social Problems, Social Change, Social Stratification, and Introductory Sociology. She also teaches the capstone course for the major.
Dr. Lowry’s research relates to aging and the life course, family and demography (especially East Asia), and the scholarship of teaching and learning. She has authored or co-authored a number of journal articles and book chapters and is currently conducting research on friendship in later-life. In 2022, Rowman & Littlefield published her textbook Aging and the Life Course: Social and Cultural Contexts.
