Students majoring in Mass Communication must declare a concentration in either Broadcast Production or Multimedia Journalism. Students can also declare a dual concentration, where they will complete all courses for both concentrations. A Degree Plan for Mass Communication can be viewed here.
Broadcast Production
The Broadcast Production concentration gives students first-hand experience in the real world as creative visual storytellers. Combining theoretical concepts with the best practices of photojournalism and television production, our students learn how to tell engaging stories in a variety of broadcast formats, including television shows, newscasts, documentaries, commercials, and live streaming productions.
Multimedia Journalism
The Multimedia Journalism concentration teaches students to be compelling storytellers. We prepare students to work as writers and reporters for television, newspapers, magazines, and digital platforms by teaching journalistic fundamentals while also incorporating the evolving storytelling methods of the 21st century. No matter the medium, our journalism students will be able to produce news, editorial, and feature stories that both inform and engage the audiences of today and tomorrow.
Our student-produced newscast, Vallo Vision News, is one of many opportunities for cross-concentration collaboration between classes in Broadcast Production and Multimedia Journalism. The newscast gives students practical, hands-on experience producing, anchoring, and managing all of the technical aspects of a real-world newscast.
