The University of Montevallo offers several degree programs focused on preparing students for careers in the growing healthcare field.

Department of Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics
The Department of Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics offers a preparatory program for students interested in the healthcare professions. At Montevallo, advising for professions such as medicine and dentistry begins in the freshman year and culminates with the “PLUNGE” in the junior year. The “PLUNGE” is the preparatory program designed specifically for the health professions’ entrance exams and application process. This is a self-study course under the watchful care of the health professions advisor at Montevallo. The students will take actual entrance exams, work on applications and personal statements and go through mock interviews.
A wide variety of pre-professional programs may be planned that will fulfill specific requirements for admission to either allopathic or osteopathic medical schools while allowing students to pursue their individual academic interests. Students should consult the catalogs of particular health-professions schools for specific information on admissions requirements.

Department of Communication Science and Disorders
The Department of Communication Science and Disorders offers a path to the healthcare field with its Speech Language Pathology program. The SLP program is committed to preparing students to become dedicated, competent clinical leaders in the field. The curriculum emphasizes the problem-solving and critical thinking skills necessary to become strong clinical professionals capable of serving a diverse client population.

The Department of Behavioral and Social Sciences prepares students for a career in healthcare with a major in Social Work. The Social Work major prepares students for beginning generalist social work practice with individuals, families, groups, communities, and organizations in a variety of social service settings including child welfare, mental health, aging, and public health.

Coordinated Program in Dietetics
Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDN) are an integral part of the health care team that encourages the prevention and treatment of disease plus promotion of wellness through expert nutrition and food guidance. Our Coordinated Program is uniquely integrated within the Exercise and Nutrition Science Department which fully qualifies graduates to make physical activity recommendations as well as offering quality, up to date nutrition assessment, education and counseling advice.

Exercise and Nutrition Science
Our Exercise and Nutrition Science program is one of few in the country that combines exercise and nutrition sciences in a single degree. We offer unique opportunities to fine-tune your career pathway through specialization in Allied Heath, Health Promotion, Nutrition and Wellness (Dietetics), or Strength and Conditioning. Many Exercise and Nutrition Science students apply to physical therapy and occupational therapy schools after completing their undergraduate degree.

Clinical Mental Health Counseling, M.Ed.
The Clinical Mental Health Counseling track is designed to prepare counselors to work in such settings as mental health centers, substance abuse treatment programs, hospitals, private practice, and community agencies. Students desiring a higher-education counseling setting should also pursue this track.

Couples and Families Counseling, M.Ed.
The Couples and Family Counseling track is designed to prepare counselors to work systemically with couples and families in a variety of settings. Relationships within couple, marriage, and family units can face times of tension and crisis. In such times, counselors can provide a sounding board, mediation, and guidance for those willing to work towards relational stability.
