- Faculty/staff are asked to create a cooperative atmosphere when dealing with students with disabilities, making clear they are willing to provide reasonable accommodations.
- Students requesting accommodations, or modifications to University or course policies, based on a medical or disability condition should be referred to the Access and Compliance office. Faculty should not request or keep medical or disability records (with the exception of notes related to absences) in academic or advising files.
- Faculty will be notified of class accommodation via emails and they should log into the AAC Faculty Portal to acknowledge receipt of those notices.
- The student and faculty member should arrange a time to discuss the accommodations and how they may be impacted by issues such as class format, types of assignments or assessments, existing class policies, or available Canvas resources, so that the student can make decisions about what accommodations they may need in each class. These conversations may happen in–person, or via phone, email, or Zoom. If AAC guidance or assistance is needed at any stage, students or faculty should include AAC@2fitfashion.com in emails or call 205-665-6250.
- Faculty are not obligated to provide accommodations until the accommodation letter is received via email, although obvious access needs should be met (such as wheelchair accessibility). Faculty should not refuse an accommodation letter without first contacting AAC. University staff also have an obligation to reasonably accommodate students with disabilities and should contact AAC for any guidance or support.
- Students may submit accommodation requests at any time throughout the semester, although sufficient notice must be provided to AAC and faculty to implement an accommodation. Faculty may not impose an artificial deadline, such as the first 2 weeks of a term, etc. Accommodations are not provided retroactively.
